Winter Tour 2011 in a nutshell
Posted in General on February 24th, 2011 by NEVAAlright…I was instructed that I need to blog more. so here goes…
Keith (My keyboard player) and I just got back from our 1st West Coast tour and I’m already itching to go back out.
We kicked off the tour with a 19 1/2 hour drive straight into San Francisco. Played Giordano Bros. in North Beach then headed down to play in my home town, Saratoga, where my dad had spent the better part of the last 3 weeks advertising our show
We played an awesome show to a full house and celebrated like it was the last show of tour. ![]()
Then it was off to Truckee in Lake Tahoe which is actually where I call home. We started off in Tahoe with a full house at Bar of America and got to see so many great friends that I hadn’t seen in almost a year. Also… it was a triple birthday party so you know people had their party pants on… My friend Josh Roelle sat in and played his harp on a couple of tunes and busted out a Devil Makes 3 song too.
The next day it was off to Kings Beach where I got to see all of my North Lake friends. I think performance wise this may have been one of the best shows we’ve ever had. Keith was dropping ridiculous solos and my voice has never felt so strong. We just had a good energy going that night.
After a late night at The Grid, we had to be up at Northstar by 1pm to start our Ice Rink show in the Village. This was a real treat for Keith who had never played in the resort type setting. I guess I forgot how cool it is to be playing music outside on a beautiful day to all the happy people skating, relaxing, drinking beers, and listening to our music. It was good to be home…
Bright an early the next morning , we were up at Northstar again but at the Mid Mountain Lodge…also an outdoor gig. We really lucked out because at the end of January in one of the most unpredictable places in the world for weather, we had beautiful sunny days and were playing in T-Shirts drinking Coronas like it was summer time
So after an amazing week in Tahoe, we headed down to southern California to Redondo Beach.
We rolled right into my old stomping grounds and immediately got used to the warm weather that we had been waiting for.
We were the featured artists in the jam session at The Shore in Hermosa Beach hosted by one of my great and talented friends, Steve Aguilar. With Bryon Holley on drums and Al Kim on bass (Two of my favorite musicians) we were jamming all of my old and a bunch of my newer songs. I’m telling you these songs have never sounded so good! It’s always a pleasure to jam with and just listen to these guys. A highlight of the tour for sure.
Well being in Southern California, you know we had to spend at let one day on the beach so a crew of us headed down to Hermosa, played some smashball, and got a beer on Hennesseys upper deck to watch the sunset.
We closed out the SoCal shows with an amazing night at The San Pedro Brewing Co. where I saw friends I hadn’t seen since grade school!!!
It was amazing..I mean people were coming out of the wood works. So it was also a surprise party for our friend Georgie (who turns out doesn’t like surprises) but the place was filled with good people and good spirits. We were also lucky enough to have Bryon Holley come jam again with us on the cajon to add to the flavor of this epic night.
So after 2 weeks of epic times, my body decided it wanted me to take a break and I got really sick with a bad flu. I’m talking 104 temperature, massive, body aches, chest cold (etc). So I was floored for 3 days and unfortunately had to cancel Yoshi’s in San Francisco, which was one of the most anticipated shows for us. Keith was a star and took care of us because everybody in the house got sick. It turns out that a bunch of people got sick right after that San Pedro show… I was cursing the person who came out and got everybody sick until I realized that I was the only one that hugged all these different people…. :-\ Sorry guys…..
So back up to Tahoe, we played Big H20 Grill in Incline Village but I was still too sick to perform properly so again Josh Roelle jammed some songs and filled in for the night.
Unfortunately this flu was relentless and I had to cancel The Pastime Club the next night which was a bummer because it’s my favorite locals bar and I had a lot of people coming out……next time.
Wow …this is getting long!!! Next time I’ll blog as I go!
So we played 2 more Northstar shows and again lucked out beautiful weather. Coronas and T-Shirts….
As sad as I was to leave my home, we had to get on the road to Grants Pass to visit with my little brother who recently turned 21. So you know I had to take him out to sushi and the bar for a shot of tequila ![]()
And last but definitely not least, we headed into Portland to play Mississippi Pizza to close out our tour.
I’ve got to tell you….Portland has to be one of the coolest cities I’ve ever been to…. and I’m not a huge fan of cities. It’s just got so much character and such a good music scene. One day I will live there….
So we rolled into Portland and again met up with some awesome blasts from the past. My friend Anthony Floyd Brady opened up the night with a bunch of his cool alternative original music and brought out a bunch of Portland folks. We played an amazing show (and again Keith’s solos were off the hook!) to a very attentive crowd and then….celebrated like there was no tomorrow!!!
Needless to say, out tour was awesome and we can’t wait to do it again in a couple of months!
Thank you so much to Scott and Donna, J. Ray, Tina, Neels and Georgie, and Dan and Molly for housing us!!! We couldn’t have done it without you. And thanks to all the friends and fans cause…we wouldn’t want to do it without you!
