About Neva

Often we find that our most meaningful creations come from a combination of simple ingredients.  When you mix raspy vocal grit with melodic guitar hooks and thought-provoking lyrics, you begin to discover the musical creations of Neva.

The unique sound developed over time and exposure to a hodgepodge of artistic styles. Born into a musical family in the small town of Saratoga, CA, Neva began playing guitar at the age of 9, and performing at just 12 years old. Influences diverse as Motown, Folk, Reggae, and Hip Hop combined with her arts-inspired childhood and classical vocal training yielded a unique Acoustic/Roots/Rock style. Emily Rademacher from Moonshine Ink recently described Neva's songs as "epic journeys carrying the audience through love, loss, pain, and ultimately empowerment," distinguishing her from the typical female singer/songwriter stereotype.

Late 2015, Neva released her sophomore album, i am I, and has been generating a lot of buzz with the new, raw, sound that emulates her live performances. She ventured from her once Indie/Pop/Rock style and paired up with Bryon Holley (percussionist, vocalist, and producer) to create a very unique album that really showcases her as a songwriter. Straying away from the full band sound, i am I, is all acoustic layered with walls of percussion, creative, decorative vocal arrangements and harmonies, and instruments you didn’t even know existed. Some of the highlights include the feel good Samba Reggae song, Blessings, with over 70 layers of drum tracks alone, and the heart breaking ballad, Light, that may have you reaching for a tissue. And lets not forget the infectious reggae stylings of the title track, i am I, that you’ll be singing along to as if you’ve heard it 100 times before.

Neva is a new sound with an old familiar feeling.

    i am I

How long can this keep going on?
How strong do I have to be to carry on?
I’m chasing a soul that moves faster than I run
Dragging bags, leaving friends, moving further from my home

    All I know is…
    I am, I am, I am I
    It’s alright

I run when I’m supposed to be standing still
Searching for uncertain things I need something new to feel
I curse the internet for access to all of this
endless knowledge and information we should all be geniuses

    All I’ve found is…
    I am, I am, I am I
    It’s alright

Over and over I make mistakes and forget the lessons I’ve learned
Playing with fire constantly and always getting burned
I put off love in creative ways claiming I’m ready
But if I only have one wine glass there there’s only going to be wine for me

    I am, I am, I am I
I play for a living staying young at heart trying to live before I die
    I am, I am, I am I
    It’s alright

    I am, I am, I am I
I’m coming in hot and I’m probably late but I’m shooting for the sky
    I am, I am, I am I
I think it’s going to be alright

    Uncomfortable

I’m amazed at how the body works
The mind triggers these parts to hurt
Before you know it you’re standing there, broken down beyond repair
But it’s fuel for the fire and as the flame it gets higher
I just want everything, everything, everything, and anything at all

So maybe fate’s got it out for me, maybe it’s just hypocrisy All this who am I? And who are you?
End up equal, valid points of view

We exist the ways we choose to see
    And images change constantly
As we complicate, we complicate, we complicate,
    We complicate it all

If my spirit breaks, it’s just a phase
Cause you ain’t ever going to bring me down
(I don’t want your diamond ring, I don’t want your diamond ring)
And if the body shakes, it’s just a sign
you’d better get your feet back on the ground
(I don’t want your diamond ring, I just want anything)

We’re all so simple in these complex little ways
It’s not easy being honest with all we’d have to face
But if the road less traveled, is the road to happiness
I hope we find a way to turn around
    And disregard the rest
I know that maybe I’m outspoken, but I don’t do repressed
You’re never knowing, you’re only hoping
You’re just hoping for the best

So if my spirit breaks, It’s just a phase
No you ain’t ever going to bring me down
And if the body shakes, it’s just a sign
You’d better get those feet back on the ground

I don’t want your diamond ring
I just want anything you feel, that’s real,
    That makes you uncomfortable

    Days and Dollars

Take me to a peaceful place where I can give my soul a break
    cause it's time
Some mistakes are hard to right, a lesson learned
    feels more like a fight

Help me to believe someday soon I'll understand

    So far, far away
Feels the world from this little life
Days and dollars disappear but I see you all the time
In the back of my mind

It's not easy staying focused on the real things without giving into doubt, no doubt
When I think of you I think of me but you're still so hard to figure out

We're all trying our best to become the person we see in our minds

    So far, far away
Feels the world from this little life
Days and dollars disappear but I see you all the time
In the back of my mind

And I'd rather be so crazy
To them all than to myself

    So far, far away
Feels your world from my little life
Days and dollars disappear but I see you all the time
And I hear you all the time
Still I feel you all the time
In the back of my mind

    Too Raw

You say you've found the balance
between love your work and home
    What difference does it make?
Because this life is ever changing
and our balance comes in waves
So what difference does it make?

For so long now...I have walked beneath your pedestal

Too Raw - Too Rough - Too Random
Aren't we only digging up our own graves?
Too Raw - Too Rough - Too Random
You find your balance on waves
Too Raw - Too Rough - Too Random
Aren't we only digging up our own graves?
Too Raw - Too Rough - Too Random

I was in search of any answers your words were to retain
    But I fear there's been a mistake
Because as much as you're admired
I've my own life to attain so really...
    What difference do we make?

Too Raw - Too Rough - Too Random
Aren't we only digging up our own graves?
Too Raw - Too Rough - Too Random
You find your balance on waves
Too Raw - Too Rough - Too Random
Aren't we only digging up our own graves?
Too Raw - Too Rough - Too Random
    You wouldn't show.....

For no longer now shall I walk beneath ones pedestal

    All I wanted was
to form a constitution for my piece of mind
Now I am dealing with the resolution
that what's mine in mind is only mine
And I balance this weight different all the time

All along down this dusty road tell me what difference do we make?

    Isolated Movements

The phone’s not ringing but I hear the buzzing
    Of silence circling my head
The room is spinning but nothing’s moving
But the echo of all that’s been said

I count from one to ten and I - Focus in on the air
I count from one to ten but I
    Only see what’s not there

    These isolated movements
These isolated moves don’t make dance

Before this restless soul becomes dependent on
    Some other strangers foreign destiny
I must keep on with, all that’s changing
From black and white to grey to red to green

Before I count from one to ten I try
To lighten up this heavy scene
But as I near the top I panic
I wonder what I’ve ever been

    These isolated movements
These isolated moves don’t make dance

When I wake up, my mind is made up
Of red flags and sour harmonies
And it’s so lonely, so very lonely
When the silence is all that you can breathe

They say you can step up and conquer all
    With a positive empowered mind
But what if all you’ve got can’t break your fall
In silence you lose all your time

    These isolated movements
These isolated moves don’t make dance

    Wish for the Sky

You got in my head and burned your way down into my heart
Relaxed and rested deep in my soul
And you expect me not to fight

What should I make and take from all of this?
To give up my dreams and live on lifeless
It was a gift from you and you’re trying to take it all back

I must be doing something wrong or maybe my fate is not that strong
But I know this love can’t just add up to nothing
    I know, I know

I’ve got a wish for the sky
I’m going to plead till I die
That I’ve got something you want, something that’s good
But you’re killing me, you’re killing me as cruel as you can

So I looked into change for any other way that this could go
Each time I gave up screaming, “I told you so”
With all else defied, you’re the only right for me
You’re the only way I see

Maybe I’m doing something wrong - Maybe my fate is not that strong
But I know all this love can’t just add up to nothing
    I swear, I swear

I’ve got a wish for the sky
I’m going to plead till I die
That I’ve got something you want, something that’s good
But you’re killing me, you’re killing me as cruel as you can

I get your messages they’re carved in stone
How can I give up when it’s all I’ll I’ve known
You can take my legs but leave my soul alone
    Give me a way

    Blessings

You stand so close yet you’re still a world away
It’s hard to recognize my good, good friend
You let the shadows over come the light
So obvious yet so quick to defend

What were you expecting of me
To turn my head and say I don’t see
How your wounded heart is now made of steel
    That empty promises can’t heal

Count your blessings, blessings, blessings in life

And the roots that we planted so long ago
Some grew up and some just grew apart
I find it harder and harder to relate
to this crooked way you play the part

What were you expecting of me
To close my eyes and say that I can’t see
How your wound heart is now made of steel
    That empty promises can’t heal

Count your blessings, blessings, blessings in life

    Moving further away from here
The longer you run the stronger the fear
All that’s been taken, all wrong that’s been done
Were blessings and gifts you first must have won

Count your blessings, blessings, blessings in life

    Light

I soar through this world like a paper plane
One swift wind and I’m blown off course again
He lands on my wings like a sweet soft mist
He comes to cool me off but he dries out quick
It’s never planned the way we crash every time we land

I think it’s time you shine a little bit of your light on me
As cold as I’ve been getting I could use that warmth from your heat

I read through them like I read through books
Either bored or obsessed and I’ve often mistook the way it ends in a basic summary
The way the course bends when he’s breathing next to me

I think it’s time you shine a little bit of your light on me
As cold as I’ve been getting I could use that warmth from your heat
So please just save a little bit of your light for me

All flaws aside and mistakes forgiven
Would it burn too bad if your light hit mine?
Would I turn for shelter to a cold dark place
Safe from all the wind and the fight

So the wind keeps blowing and the mist keeps drying
It takes everything I’ve got to keep on flying but I know
there’s a light above for me
And one day I’m going to crash right into your heat

And you’ll open up the skies and shine down that light on me
I feel you getting closer but I need that warmth from your heat
I hope you saved some of that bright light for me

    Things I'll Never Be

You may be my one and only savior
For this mending heart to learn to bend
Cause it just hurt so bad to love you like that
Knowing all along how it would end

You may be but the most biggest failure
For my will to recognize such pain
The things I saw from so far away
Were clear in sight in the middle of the day
But i didn't want to talk about those things

And it showed right from the start
Never could I leave you - Never could I part

One of these days I'll forget about you
Forget about all the things you'll never do
One of these days you'll forget about me
Forget about all the things I'll never be

You may be my one and only savior
For this mending heart to learn to bend
Cause it just hurt so bad to love you like that
Just knowing all along how it would end

And it showed right from the start
Never could I leave you - Never could I part
And I froze down to the heart
Hungry as I was I pulled myself apart

And when I finally find a future past this fever
I'll find a few beliefs here
And once I start crying over better things than you
Well I find some hope in truth

One of these days I'll forget about you
Forget about all the things I"ll never be
On of these days you'll forget about me
Forget about the things I'll never be

    The things I'll never be.....

    Bring You Down

If you raise your head high enough to see
The light on the other side
You'll see valleys of darkness and all you must defeat
But they are places to pass through- Not to reside

You know that I hold you high above the world we see
Maybe I should bring you down
Cause it's been so long and my arms have just been shaking weak
How I hate to see you on the ground

I know you've probably got your head around it
    and called it compromise
But when you sleep are you scared to close your eyes
We all had expectations of what our lives would be
I think it's never too late to decide

When I see you - I see through all your circumstantial moves
Maybe I should close my eyes
Cause it's been so long and I can't do anything but lose
How I hate to see you compromised

    I hear you're fine
    I'm here, I'm trying
To make it through all these valleys of my own

You know that I hold you high above the world we see
I think it's time I bring you down
Cause it's been so long and my heart is just breaking weak
How I hate to see you on the ground
I think it's time I bring you down
